Featured Fly - Thread Body Olive Nymph

Winter time around a tailwater means it's time to fill the fly boxes with BWO Nymphs and Midge Larvae. This little wonder would fall under the BWO category. It is a very simple fly that only takes a couple materials. I have fished it on local small streams around the shop and the little wild trout love it.

Materials:

Hook: TMC 102Y sz. 18 - 22

Bead: Tungsten Bomb Bead - Black

Thread: 8/0 UNI Thread - Olive Dun 

Rib: Ultra Wire sz. Small - Black 

Tail: CDL Feathers 

Body: UNI Thread - Olive Dun

Thorax: Ice Dub - UV Dark Olive 

Step 1: Make a small thread base behind the bead.

Step 2: Make a tight thread base all the way to the bend of the hook. Tie in the ultra wire as you go.

Step 3: Grab about ten CDL fibers and tie in.

Step 4: Wrap the thread forward over top the CDL fibers. This helps as a little bulk to the body.

Step 5: Wrap back towards the bend of the hook, stop short and bring the thread forward, repeat this step a few times. This will make a slight tapered body out of the thread.

Step 6: Wrap the Ultra Wire forward, making a nice even rib.

Step 7: Dub the thorax, making about 3 wraps of Ice Dub.

Step 8: Whip finish and cut thread.

Featured Fly - Iced-Out Pheasnt Tail

This is a fast and simple little fly. I was tying some smaller pheasant tails up for our last New Hampshire trip, to mimic BWO nymphs. This little guy was what came out of the pile of fly tying crap all over my desk. It worked well on Landlocks and Brook Trout. This one should be a great fly for the up and coming winter months.

Materials:

Hook: 2499 SPBL sz. 16-20

Beadhead: Tungsten Bomb Bead - Gold 

Thread: UNI Thread 6/0 - Fl. Fire Orange 

Rib: Ultra Wire - Small - Gold

Body: Ice Dub - Brown/Olive 

Thorax: Ice Dub - Peacock 

Tail/Back: Pheasant Tail - Olive

Step 1: Make a small thread base, just behind the bead.

Step 2: Finish the thread base, tying in the wire as you go back.

Step 3: Making one wrap, secure the pheasant tail, at the bend of the hook.

Step 4: Dub the body with ice dub.

Step 5: Pull the pheasant tail forward, tying in right behind the bead.

Step 6: Wrap the wire forward, securing the pheasant tail and making a nice rib.

Step 7: Cut off extra pheasant tail.

Step 8: Dub the thorax with a small amount of peacock ice dub.

Step 9: Whip fishing and cut off.

Featured Fly - BWO Nymph

Here is another great fly from the latest issue of Fly Tyer, I saw it and immediately grabbed all the materials to tie it. I have fished it a few times this winter, and it has performed will. Whether there is a full on olive hatch, or you know know that there is olives in the system, make this one of your first picks this winter.

Materials:

Hook: TMC 2488 - 16-20

Thread: UNI Thread 6/0 - Olive 

Tail: Senyo's Shaggy Dub 

Abdomen: Turkey Biot - Olive

Thorax: Superfine Dubbing  - Olive 

Wing Case: Scud Back - Black

Legs: Senyo's Shaggy Bug

Step 1: Make a thread base.

Step 2: Tie in a single strand of  shaggy dub, making a V for the tails.

Step 3: Tie in the Biot, then wrap your thread half way back to the hook eye.

Step 4: Wrap the Biot forward.

Step 5: Tie in the Scud back, for the shell case.

Step 6: Tie in one strand of shaggy dub on each side of the fly.

Step 7: Dub the thorax.

Step 8: Pull the scud back forward, and tie off.

Step 9: Whip finish and cut off.

Featured Fly - CD's Biot Emerger

Here is a fly Casey came up with to fool the picky trout of Spring Creek, it is an awesome BWO emerger pattern that proved it worth last weekend in State College. You can sink it right to the bottom or you can fish it in the film behind an adult, either way its deadly when Olives are coming off.

Materials

Hook: TMC 206BL sz. 18-22

Thread: UNI Thread 8/0 Olive 

Shuck: Antron - Olive Brown

Abdomen: Goose Biot - BWO

Thorax: Superfine Dubbing - BWO

Wing: Ice Dub - UV Dun

Wing 2: CDC - Med Dun

Step 1: Make a thread base, tying in the Antron about a 3rd of the way down the hook bend.

Step 2: Tie in a goose biot from the tip.

Step 3: Wrap the goose biot 2/3s of the way up the hook shank.

Step 4: Tie in the Ice dub, right at the end of the goose biot.

  
Step 5: Dub the thorax.

Step 6: Pull the Ice Dub wing forward and tie off.

Step 7: Tie in a small stack of Med. Dun CDC for the front wing.

  
Step 8: Dub the rest of the fly forming the head.

Featured Fly - Trigger Nymph

Here is a spin of of Mike Mercer's Trigger nymph, I made a few simple substitutions to this great fly, so that it is a bit faster to tie. You will notice on his original pattern, he uses pheasant tail for the tail, I use CDL feathers, the CDL feathers are a bit stronger so they will last a bit longer before breaking off. The other small difference that I do, or don't do, is add legs, its one more step and I'm working on simplicity with my nymphs these days. This little nymph works great during a hatch or around the time of a hatch, this particular pattern is tied in BWO colors, I also have it in hendrickson pink, sulphur yellow, and march brown. Fish this guy anytime of the year and you will love the results.

Materials

Hook: TMC 2488 sz. 12-20

Bead: Cyclops Bead sz. to match hook

Thread: UNI Thread 6/0 - Olive 

Tail: CDL Feathers

Body: Goose Biot - Olive 

Thorax: SLF Squirrel Dubbing - Olive 

Wing: Ice Dub - Olive 

Step 1: Make a thread base, stopping just after the bend of the hook.

Step 2: Tie in 5 to 8 CDL Fibers.

Step 3: Tie in the goose biot, move the thread to behind the bead.

Step 4: Grab the goose biot with hackle pilers, making even turns wrap biot up to bead.

Step 5: Dub a section behind the bead leave a little room for the wing and second dubbing wrap.

Step 6: Make a dubbing ball with the ice dub, slide it down on-top of the fly. Tie down, keeping all dubbing on the top.

Step 7: Make one or two more wraps of SLF Dubbing behind the bead. Whip finish and cut.
