Winter Trout Fly Videos
So all of these videos have been posted before, and can also be found on my YouTube channel. However each of these are great flies to have ready for the winter months ahead of us. Winter is a great time to get out and fish your local tailwaters and spring creeks. Midges, caddis larva, and sow bugs are my top fly choices for this time of year. Enjoy each video and get those boxes filled!

Video - DP Midge
Last year I tried to put up 7 post a month, in doing so some of the post were just filler and weren't the quality that I would have liked. This year I am going to try for at least 3 a month and make them of higher quality. Im sure during the season I will do more with fishing reports, and stream photos. My goal is to give you a Gear Review, Fishing Photos, and a Video each month. I will do my best. Last post was Fishing Photos, and the Gear Review, now the video.
This is a fly that a good friend of mine showed me a long time ago, and it has been my number one midge fly for the past couple years. I did a featured fly on it a while back, and decided that this would be a great on to add to the "silent" film collection. Enjoy

The Silent Midge - Video
It is winter time, even if it doesn't feel like it. This is the time of year when fish really key in on small midges. They can come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes; from a bright red to a dull black. No matter the color, trout love them! This video shows you one of my favorite mid winter midge patterns. Enjoy!

Macro Midges
I am really beginning to love this new lens. It took a bit to get used to, but once you've taken a million pictures, a few actually come out nice. Below are a few example of some of my favorite midge patterns for the winter months.

Embrace the Cold
Winter is here, it has been here for some time now. I looked at the extended forecast this morning and there is hope, by the weekend they are calling for upper 30s! I decided to embrace winter yesterday. I got all geared up with 100 layers and went fishing. I didn't go far just a quick jump from the shop and I was walking the banks of my favorite local gem. It was defiantly winter and the fishing was a little slow. None the less I got out and the hot fly was the Emerging Zebra Midge from the last Brew n' Bugs.

Winter Flies - Micro
Tomorrows' high is 13 and the low is -4, why not talk about some flies for the winter. During the winter months my fly selections become very simple. I fish small and smaller flies, with size 18 being a large. Most of the time I fish some form of midge larva, but sometimes the trout just want something else.
BLM Nymph, this is a quick and easy fly to tie, change the color of the body, it can be just about anything you want it to be.
SYE Sow Bug, a must have for anyone fishing spring creeks or tailwaters in the winter!
Barr Emerger, one fly that most locals love to fish on the Tully. A great little addition to the box.
Caddis Larva, they come in all different colors and sizes, the smaller the better in the winter months.
Olive Thread Body, perfect fly to drop under a San Juan worm. Or to use when Olives are coming off.
Micro Juan, tied by Mooser, this little guy kills it in the winter. Just ask him about it and watch how excited he gets talking about it.
Micro Pheasant Tail, size 18 down to a 22 fish these guys any day of the week.
Hot Collar Jig, a nice fly to drag along the bottom for those picky fish that don't want to move.
Micro Copper John, also tied by Mooser, a great all around nymph for the winter.
Copper Stone, a great meal for trout on any stream with little winter stones.

Big Spring - New Years Day
The Parenti's, very loyal customers of the shop, and great friends of
mine, made me an offer I couldn't refuse. If they paid for gas, brought
lunch, and hot coco, in return I would show them one of my favorite streams in
PA, Big Spring. How could anyone say No to that, I sure couldn't. So off we went to greet the new year in style. It was an awesome day on the water with lots of fish to hand, including a couple gems. If fishing with them wasn't good enough, my good buddy and the Orvis sales rep Doug, meet up with us for a couple hours. He brought some new rods to try out, the Recon and Superfine. I was lucky enough to test the Recon on a very nice rainbow. I will be doing a review on these rods in the near future. To no surprise, sow bugs, pheasant tails, and midges were the hot flies, we even got a couple fish to eat off the surface in the evening.
What a great way to ring in the New Year!!!

Featured Fly - Rough Fishers Serendipitous Midge
As shown in my last post, this is one of my top 10 midges to fish in the winter. It is a very flashy and loud fly, so low clear water is not the best time to use it. However a little high and off color water, this little guys kills it.
Materials:
Hook: TMC 2457 sz. 18-24
Bead: Tungsten Bomb Bead - Silver
Thread: UNI Thread 8/0 - Blue
Rib: Ultra Wire - Small - Blue
Body: Mirage Tinsel - Med
Wing: Ice Dub - Golden Brown
Collar: Ice Bud - Black
Step 1: Make a small thread base right behind the bead.
Step 2: Tie in the Ultra Wire and the Tinsel.
Step 3: Make a thread base, tying the material back to below the hook bend.
Step 4: Tightly wrap the tinsel forward, making a nice body.
Step 5: Wrap the Ultra Wire forward, forming a nice rib.
Step 6: Center tie a clump of Ice Dub right behind the bead.
Step 7: Wrap over the ice dub, making it fold back over the fly.
Step 8: Trim the ice dub.
Step 9: Make a small collar with the black ice dub.
Step 10: Whip finish and cut off.
